Care & Cleaning
MAINTAIN YOUR HAT WITH THESE TIPS
Always handle your hat by the base of the crown (along the brim break). Avoid handling the crown as much as possible. You should never pinch your hat’s crown between your fingers. This will cause wear & tear on fur felt and breakage on straw.
Occasionally wipe down your straw with a soft lint free cloth, or brush it with a soft brush, preferably horsehair, to remove dust and dirt. Additionally, wiping your hat down with a lightly damp, clean sponge will help preserve the vitality of the straw.
We recommend regular dusting of fur felt hats with a hat brush. Starting at the crown, brush your hat with light, counter-clockwise strokes. If you fur felt hat gathers any lint or pet hair, use a lint roller to safely lift up unwanted fibers.
Heat will shrink the interior sweatband and can distort the shape of the hat. Do not leave your hat in a hot car or direct sunlight. Store your hat in a cool dry place to help it to retain its shape and stay clean. Out-of-season, store your hat in a hat box.
Try to prevent your straw hat from getting wet. Water will cause the straw to swell, discolor, and lose its shape. If it gets wet, wipe it down with a soft cloth. Never blow dry. However, the natural fibers of your straw hat can dry out in arid climates, making it susceptible to cracking. An occasional light misting of steam or wiping it down with a lightly damp sponge will help preserve your hat. You can hold it over light steam and work it back into shape if it gets distorted.
If your fur felt hat gets wet, first return the hat to its original shape, then turn down the interior leather sweatband and rest the hat on the sweatband to dry. Do not rest the hat on it's brim while wet if the brim is turned down. If the brim has been snapped back up you may carefully rest the hat on the brim to dry.
Do not expose a wet hat to heat as this will cause the interior leather sweatband to shrink as well as causing irregular patterns in the felt once dry.

For Fur Felt, lightly dampen a clean cloth or a soft sponge with cold water and rub the area with In a circular motion. Once dry, lightly brush the nap to smooth the area. Our horsehair brushes, available in are recommended for this.
